On April 4,  “A Minecraft Movie” was released in theaters, starring American actors Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garrett, the Garbage Man.

The film opens with Steve discovering the Overworld through a cube called the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal being combined. He however is captured by the villain  named Malgosha in the Nether. The story then shifts to focus on the life of Henry and his sister Natalie, their realtor agent Dawn, as well as the Garbage Man. Through their own struggles, the four characters meet and collectively find the portal to the Overworld. To get back home, they commence on a magical journey with Steve after he is let free to retrieve the orb.

Many were skeptical of the movie, believing it would be a complete joke based off of its trailer.

“I played Minecraft before and like the game, but watching it as a movie seems weird,” sophomore Autumn Mitchell said. “I’m probably not going to see it. I mean, what would it even be about?”

Though, the movie proved to be a success, claiming a record-breaking opening weekend as it earned $157 million in ticket sales from theaters across the U.S and Canada. Numerous people who were originally negative critics changed their tune after watching the movie.

“I thought it was going to be worse,” senior Jacob Castro said. “I had low expectations for the movie, but it turned out to be really funny.”

Despite its initial critics, the film turned out to appeal to many different audiences between younger children and older teens with its humorous depiction of the Minecraft world.
